It’s a great privilege to be able to share my avid and lifetime interest
of the weather which affects everyone on the planet, even if we are not
conscious of it!
Forecasting the weather has been my passion since an early age
My interest in the weather began at an early age when a severe thunderstorm broke out when I visited my Grandparents. A bolt of lightning struck a tree and severed one of the limbs, the noise was like that of a bomb going off. It certainly left an "impression" as that event was after the hot Summer of 1976 when I was just 7!
Forecasting the weather with my own weather station
I’ve been taking accurate daily weather records since March 1st 1986 and it really is part of my daily routine. Although all the barometers and thermometers I had over the years were very good, technology moves on and I thought I would treat myself in 2007 to an automatic weather station. The system is wireless and relays all the information to the computer, which records a wide spectrum of weather statistics every half hour and is a vital part of my weather recording and forecasting.
Worcestershires weather and what factors influence it
Worcestershire is a geographically a unique county and so is its weather. It’s sheltered by the world famous hill ranges of the Malverns and Cotswolds and is well watered by the Rivers Avon, Teme and the mighty Severn, making it one of the most fertile counties in the UK. It’s in the "rain shadow" of the Black mountains in Wales about 40 miles to the west making it one of the driest areas of the country.
Our obsession with the weather
Its true what they say, this country's most talked about topic is the weather and why not! Although we don’t have the most severe weather on the planet, we have an ever changing weather pattern bringing us some of the most enjoyable and photogenic weather on Earth. It’s also true that in the UK it’s possible to get four seasons of weather in one day, where else on Earth can you get that?
Why does weather fascinate me?
I’m fascinated by all types of weather, but "severe" weather is what I enjoy most. This enjoyment has taken me out to the Great Plains of the USA, namely Tornado Alley, to see some of the most powerful storms on the planet and witness these potentially deadly, but absolutely beautiful, storms. These really do make you feel very humble and small in comparison to the enormous energy the weather holds. Even in this world of technology and communications our human race is just as affected by the weather as our ancestors were, even more so as our infrastructure is totally fragile in severe weather conditions.
